Module 5 — Bitumen Binder Testing

Overview

The course trains candidates in the correct binder test methods as per industry standards and delivers the theoretical component required to deem the candidate competent. Delegates execute testing procedures pertaining to penetration grade, cutback, emulsion and modified binder materials to the latest SANS 4001 specifications.

Tests covered

• Penetration grade bitumen — penetration test, ring & ball / softening point, dynamic viscosity, spot test, rolling thin film oven test
• Cutback bitumen — distillation test, kinematic viscosity, flash point
• Bitumen emulsions — binder content, viscosity, coagulation value, sedimentation test, residue test on sieving, particle charge
• Modified binders — as per Sabita Manual TG1, applicable to elastomers & plastomers

Methods covered include the revisions as per SANS 4001.
